Raulito's Pollo

Raulito's Pollo

Destination: Monteverde

On the shade dappled streets of Santa Elena, Raulito's roadside lunch counter stands out as a tribute to Costa Rican typical fast food; fresh, quick and hearty. Raulito's blue tiled-countertops, wooden stools, and rotisserie oven caught my eye while walking down the street looking for a restaurant to stretch $5 dollars into a reasonable lunch.

Just over the counter you can see the brick oven where they roast whole chickens and pigs fresh, daily. There isn't much to the menu, but all you really want is chicken or pork after smelling what's cooking. I settled on a piece of roasted chicken, some pico de gallo (chopped tomatoes, onions and cilantro) served with rice and fresh, house-made corn tortillas for $5.  The chicken alone took up nearly half the plate, but really the best part of the meal was the thick, fresh tortilla. In fact, I watched the chef pound out more while eating – another great part about sitting at the lunch counter.

Ambiance

Outside lunch counter located next to Johnny's pizza on the street to Cerro Plano. Cool breezes pass through the verdant mountain lane while locals and tourists visit the lunch counter looking for empanadas and whole roasted chickens.
