These may include the abdomen, face, neck, buttocks, thighs and arms. The majority of liposuction patients are women, though in recent years, male liposuction has become increasingly common.

There are two basic methods used in liposuction: tumescent and ultrasonic. Both techniques have common surgical elements, and even if ultrasound is used, it will be followed by tumescent liposuction.

In tumescent liposuction, also known as micro-liposuction, the surgeon first injects a large amount of anesthetic into the tissue, causing it to swell and become rigid. This technique, performed since1982, is considered the safest and most effective. The fat is then suctioned out with long thin rods called cannula. This type of liposuction can be performed through a few tiny incisions, which can be hidden within natural skin creases. The tumescent method may reduce blood loss and alleviate pain.

Like the tumescent method, ultrasonic liposuction also begins by injecting the fat with tumescent fluid to make the fat stiff. Instead of being suctioned, the fat is liquefied with high-frequency ultrasonic energy using a long thin rod that emits ultrasonic waves. The rod is later inserted into the body through a small incision and the fat is suctioned out.

Vibroliposuction is one of the most recent liposuction techniques, and is a safe and effective procedure. The emulsion principle allows the removal of fat without harming any other tissues, which results in a shorter recovery period.

The location of the liposuction plays a crucial part in determining the size of the cannula and the amount of incisions. The most common liposuction cannulas are 3 mm, but they can range from 1.5 mm to up to 6 mm. As a general rule, the smaller the cannula, the more incisions needed. Larger cannulas with bigger incisions achieve results over a broader area through possibly only one incision.

After liposuction the skin may be swollen and bruised for several days. The area treated is usually wrapped in elastic bandages, or support hosiery to compress tissue and help control swelling and bruising. You may be asked to wear the compression bandage or garment for several days.

The final results of liposuction may not be evident for up to six months. The procedure can be repeated on a specific area of the body a number of times, as long as it has completely healed from the previous treatment. This is usually unnecessary as fat removal is permanent in traditional liposuction.

Liposuction is usually performed under general anesthesia, but in some cases, local anesthesia is used. You should discuss anesthesia options with your surgeon. Total surgery time will vary depending on the size of the area being treated. In most cases, it usually lasts less than an hour.
